This paper studies an asymmetrically perturbed spherical gas bubble in an incompressible fluid with surface tension. The gas pressure in the bubble is assumed to be spatially uniform. It is demonstrated that for an irrotational fluid, any equilibrium gas bubble must be spherical.\N\NFor a small asymmetric initial perturbation of the spherical bubble, the authors consider an initial value problem for the linerization of the evolution equations. It is proved that, in the case of thermal damping without viscosity, the linearised initial value problem is globally well-posed. Radial component of perturbation tends to zero exponentially as time tents to infinity, while non-radial components undergo undamped oscillations.\N\NThen, the authors prove that, in the case of viscous dissipation, the initial value problem is linearly and nonlinearly ill-posed due to an incompatibility of normal stress boundary conditions for non-spherical solutions and the irrotationality assumption. Therefore, in this case, a model is required that takes into account either vorticity generated at the bubble-fluid boundary or the spatial non-uniformity of the gas pressure, or both.
