Consider the set of all polynomials of degree \(d\) and let \(H\) be the set of all hyperbolic polynomials (i.e., the orbit of every critical\Npoint converges to an attracting cycle) of degree \(d\), which is the disjoint union of open topological disks. The principal hyperbolic domain \(\mathrm{PHD}_d\) is defined as the hyperbolic component containing the polynomial \(z\to z^d\) and consisting of all \(f\in H\) such that the filled Julia set is a Jordan disc. In this paper, the author characterizes elements of \(\mathrm{PHD}_3\) and elements of its closure. These results extend results of \textit{A. Blokh} et al. [Nonlinearity 27, No. 8, 1879--1897 (2014; Zbl 1304.37030)].\N\NFurthermore, the author determines the basins of attraction for cubic polynomials, and finds technical conditions for a polynomial \(f\in \mathrm{PHD}_3\). Some applications and examples are given in the final part of the paper.
