The irregular cusps are cusps where the lattice for Fourier expansion is smaller than the lattice of translation. In the present paper, the author studies and classifies the irregular cusps for orthogonal groups of signature \((2, b)\) and clarifies the effect of such cusps on the study of Kodaira dimension of orthogonal modular varieties. He defines and studies irregular zero-dimensional and one-dimensional cusps, respectively, and gives some examples of groups with or without irregular cusps. He also gives a comparison of the vanishing order between cusp forms and pluricanonical forms.
