The authors are concerned with a convergent numerical scheme to solve an initial-boundary value problem attached to the 2D unsteady and incompressible Navier-Stokes system. The system is in velocity-pressure variables, and the problem is a Dirichlet homogeneous one. To march in time, they use an implicit-explicit BDF2 scheme with variable-step and for spatial discretisation, they use a Taylor-Hood finite element method with quadratic velocity and linear pressure. To cope with the nonlinearity in the Navier-Stokes equation, the authors introduce a discrete orthogonal convolution (DOC) for the kernel, and to accomplish the convergence, they work under a mild time step-ratio constraint. To underline the capabilities of the numerical scheme, they carry out three numerical experiments. Thus, first, they test the numerical accuracy and the mesh robustness of the IMEX-BDF2 scheme, then they asses how their scheme capture some fine physical structures when the solution involves large variations of time-scale and eventually they test the robustness of convergence analysis on some classical lid-driven cavity flow problems.
