The periodic tiling conjecture asserts that if \(F \subset \mathbb{Z}^d\) is a finite set that tiles \(\mathbb{Z}^d\) by translations, then \(F\) also tiles \(\mathbb{Z}^d\) by translations periodically (it can be formulated in both discrete and continuous settings).\N\NIn this paper, the authors disprove this conjecture for sufficiently large \(d\), which also implies a disproof of the corresponding conjecture for Euclidean spaces \(\mathbb{R}^d\). They construct an aperiodic translational tiling with a single tile in \(\mathbb{Z}^2 \times G_0\) for a certain finite abelian group \(G_0\).
