This is the first part of a three-part paper the multidimensional nonlinear Schur parametrization. Here multidimensional nonlinear orthogonal parametrization algorithms for higher-order (and non-Gaussian) sequences are introduced, as a generalization of the linear orthogonal parametrization procedures for second-order stochastic sequences, based on the Schur algorithm. Part II, ibid. 15, No. 3, 243--275 (2004; Zbl 1083.93029).
