A second-order differential equation is examined, where the coefficients depend on a Dirac-delta function. The maximum principle is used to justify the existence of a unique generalized solution and to derive a priori bounds. The new element in the analysis are boundary layers as a result of mixed boundary conditions, especially interior layers. The proposed technique permits to transform the equation into an equation with discontinuous coefficients only. The latter is investigated by means of asymptotic analysis decomposing the solution into a smooth component and a singular one. As a result, the asymptotics of the solution is obtained.
