    The large time asymptotics of small solutions to the Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional nonlinear damped wave equation \[ v_{tt} + v_t -v_{xx}+v^{1+\sigma} = 0, \;x \in \mathbb R, \;t>0, \] \[ v(0,x)=\epsilon v_0(x), \;v_t(0,x) = \epsilon v_1(x) \] in the subcritical case \(\sigma \in (2-\epsilon^3,2)\) is studied. It is assumed that the initial data \(v_0, \;(1+\partial_x)^{-1}v_1 \in L^\infty \cap L^{1,a}, a \in (0,1) \), where \(L^{1,a}={\varphi \in L^1; | | \varphi| | _{L^{1,a}}=| | \langle \cdot \rangle^a \varphi | | _{L^1}<\infty}, \;\langle x \rangle =\sqrt{1+x^2}\) and \[ \int_\mathbb{R} (v_0(x)+v_1(x))dx >0 \] It is proved that there exists a positive value \(\epsilon\) such that the Cauchy problem has a unique global solution \(v(t,x) \in C ([0,\infty); L^\infty \cap L^{1,a}),\) satisfying the following time decay estimate: \[ | | v(t)| | _{L^\infty} \geq C \epsilon \langle t \rangle^{-1/\sigma} \] for large \(t>0,\) here \(2-\epsilon^3<\sigma<2.\)
