The author studies the compressible Euler equation with dissipation effect: \(\partial_t\rho + \partial_xm=0\), \(\partial_tm + \partial_x(m^2/\rho+P(\rho))=\rho-m\), \(P(\rho)=\rho^\gamma\). The system models the fluid movement in a vertical column of the medium. The momentum \(m\) vanishes at the boundary of the domain and the total amount is preserved. Using the Lax-Friedrichs scheme and the compensate compactness approach, the author studies the existence, uniform boundedness, and large time behavior of the weak entropy solutions. The time-limit equations for density and momentum are obtained and exponential decay is proved.
