This is a study on potential theory with external fields. Let \(Q:\mathbb C\to \mathbb R\cup\{\infty\}\) be a \(C^3\) function satisfying certain additional technical conditions. This function plays the role of ``potential'' or ``external field''. We denote by \(\sigma\) the corresponding equilibrium measure. For \(n\) points \(z_1,z_2,\dots, z_n\) in the plane, consider the weighted energy \[ H_n(z_1,z_2,\dots, z_n)=\sum_{i\neq j} \log|z_i-z_j|^{-1}+n\sum_{j=1}^nQ(z_j). \] A set \(F_n=\{z_{n1},z_{n2},\dots, z_{nn}\}\) which minimizes \(H_n\) is called an \(n\)-Fekete set corresponding to \(Q\). It is well known that the measures \(\mu_n=n^{-1} (\delta_{z_{n1}}+\dots +\delta_{z_{nn}})\) converge to \(\sigma\) as \(n\to\infty\). The authors prove that the Fekete sets are, in a sense, maximally spread out with respect to the equilibrium measure. Their results are stronger for the potential \(Q(z)=|z|^2\). The main theorems and their proofs are inspired by \textit{H. J. Landau}'s paper [Acta Math. 117, 37--52 (1967; Zbl 0154.15301)].
