One says that a complete noncompact Riemannian \(n\)-manifold \((M,g)\) (\(n\geq 2\)) admits the Trudinger-Moser inequality if there exist positive numbers \(\alpha\), \(\tau\), \(\beta\) such that \[ \displaystyle\sup_{u\in W^{1,n}(M), \|u\|_{1,\tau}\leq 1}\int_M\left(e^{\alpha|u|^\frac{n}{n-1}}-\sum_{k=0}^{n-2}\frac{\alpha^k|u|^\frac{nk}{n-1}}{k!}\right)dv_g\leq \beta, \] where \(\|u\|_{1,\tau}=\left(\int_M|\nabla_gu|^ndv_g\right)^\frac 1n+\tau\left(\int_M|u|^ndv_g\right)^\frac 1n\). The Sobolev embedding suggested the consideration of the following problems: the description of complete noncompact Riemannian \(n\)-manifolds admitting the Trudinger-Moser inequalities; the formulation of a sufficient geometric condition for a complete noncompact Riemannian \(n\)-manifold to admit the Trudinger-Moser inequality; the verification whether this condition is a necessary one. The author answers these questions showing, among other results, that, if a manifold \((M,g)\) admits the Trudinger-Moser inequality, then there exists \(\varepsilon >0\) such that \(\text{Vol}_g(B_x(1))\geq \varepsilon\) for each \(x\in M\). A required sufficient condition reads roughly speaking as follows: for \((M,g)\), the Ricci curvature is bounded from below and the injectivity radius is positive. However, it turns out that the second condition is not necessary. Then, the author considers the Adams inequality and applies the Trudinger-Moser inequality to existence results for a quasilinear equation with nonlinear term of exponential growth.
