A reasonably regular set \(A\) in the Euclidean space can be approximated by superimposing it with a Poisson-Voronoi tessellation and taking the union of all cells with centres that belong to \(A\). The resulting union of polytopes is called the Poisson-Voronoi approximation of \(A\); it converges to \(A\) as the intensity of the underlying Poisson process that defines the Voronoi tessellation increases to infinity. The authors establish asymptotic expansions for the expectation and variance for a number of geometric functionals of the approximating sets. Functionals of interest include volume, surface area, Hausdorff measure, and the number of facets of lower-dimensional skeletons. The authors also consider the complexity of the so-called Voronoi zone and the iterated Poisson-Voronoi approximation. The obtained results are consequences of general limit theorems proved with an abstract Steiner-type formula applicable in the setting of stabilizing functionals.
