\textit{D. T. Gay} and \textit{R. Kirby} [Geom. Topol. 20, No. 6, 3097--3132 (2016; Zbl 1372.57033)] showed that every closed 4-manifold admits a trisection, a particular nice geometric decomposition of a closed 4-manifold that is analogous to the Heegaard decomposition of a closed 3-manifold. Among all closed 4-manifolds, closed symplectic 4-manifolds are distinguished and can be studied using the Lefschetz pencil/fibration structure on it following the work of \textit{S. K. Donaldson} [J. Differ. Geom. 53, No. 2, 205--236 (1999; Zbl 1040.53094)]. The article under review gives a canonical construction of a trisection structure from a Lefschetz pencil structure. In a sense, it justifies that trisections are compatible with Lefschetz pencils and both are nice geometric decompositions of manifolds.
