Let \(G\) be a complex reductive algebraic group and let \(G/H\) be a spherical homogeneous space. For any \(G\)-invariant linear system on \(G/H\) one can consider the moment polytope and the so-called Newton-Okounkov polytope, the latter is actually fibered over the former with string polytopes as fibers. In the paper under review the definitions of such rational convex polytopes are recalled and appropriate references are given. Let \(E_1,\ldots,E_k\) be \(G\)-invariant linear systems on \(G/H\). The authors give a necessary and sufficient condition on \(E_1,\ldots,E_k\) such that a generic choice of sections in \(E_1,\ldots,E_k\) define a non-empty complete intersection \(X_k\) in \(G/H\). In this case, they provide a formula for the arithmetic genus of the, necessarily smooth, generic complete intersection \(X_k\). All is expressed in combinatorial terms by formulas which involve the number of integral points in the relative interior of suitable rational convex polytopes defined starting from the moment polytopes and the Newton-Okounkov polytopes of \(E_1,\ldots,E_k\).
