A Banach algebra \(A\) is \(n\)-weakly amenable (for a given \(n\in\mathbb{N}\)) if every continuous derivation from \(A\) into its \(n\)th iterated dual is inner. In [\textit{T.\,D.\thinspace Blackmore}, Semigroup Forum 55, No.\,2, 196--205 (1997; Zbl 0878.43006)], it was shown that the semigroup algebra \(\ell^1(S)\) is weakly amenable for each regular Rees matrix semigroup \(S\). \textit{H.\,G.\thinspace Dales, A.\,T.-M.\thinspace Lau} and \textit{D.\,Strauss} proved in [``Banach algebras on semigroups and on their compactifications'', Mem.\ Amer.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 966 (2010; Zbl 1192.43001)] that the weak amenability of a Banach algebra \(A\) is related to the weak amenability of the matrix Banach algebra \(M_n(A)\), and used this to derive the aforementioned result by Blackmore. In the paper under review it is shown that, for the specified semigroups \(S\), the Banach algebra \(\ell^1(S)\) is \(2k+1\)-weakly amenable for each \(k\in\mathbb{N}\).
