The \(\bar{\partial}\)-Neumann problem on a Hermitian manifold deals with solving \(\Delta u=f \) where \(\Delta = \bar{\partial} \bar{\partial} ^{\dag} + \bar{\partial}^{\dag} \bar{\partial}\) with Neumann-type boundary conditions (arising from integration-by-parts and the Stokes theorem). The point of this problem is to provide the \(L^2\)-minimal solution of \(\bar{\partial} \alpha = \beta\) which is in turn useful for the study of the Bergman kernel among other things. Chakrabarti computed the spectrum of the (Gaffney extension) of the Laplacian for \(X \times Y\) where \(X\) and \(Y\) are Hermitian manifolds. He related the spectrum to the spectra of \(X\) and \(Y\). One of the aims of the current paper is to get a similar formula for the essential spectrum. Indeed, this is a consequence of Theorem 1.1 of the paper (which actually deals with fairly general Hilbert complexes). Another question studied in this paper is the compactness of the inverse of the Laplacian (with the Neumann-type boundary conditions). A ``negative'' result (Theorem 5.6) is proved in this paper. Essentially, the inverse of the Laplacian for the produce of \(n\) Riemann surfaces is not compact on \((0,q)\)-forms (where \(0\leq q\leq n-1\)) provided at least one factor has an infinite dimensional Bergman space.
