The authors study problems of existence and uniqueness of greedy bases in Banach spaces. Due to \textit{S. V. Konyagin} and \textit{V. N. Temlyakov}'s theorem [East J. Approx. 5, No. 3, 365--379 (1999; Zbl 1084.46509)], a semi-normalized unconditional basis \(\{e_n\}_{n=1}^\infty\) of a Banach space \(X\) is greedy if and only if it has the following additional property: there is a constant \(C>0\) such that \(\left\|\sum_{n \in A} e_n\right\| \leq C \left\|\sum_{n \in B} e_n\right\|\) for every pair of finite subsets \(A, B \subset \mathbb N\) with the same number of elements. Every symmetric basis is greedy, but there are bases, like the normalized Haar system in \(L_p[0,1]\), \(1<p<\infty\), which are greedy but not symmetric [\textit{V. N. Temlyakov}, Adv. Comput. Math. 8, No. 3, 249--265 (1998; Zbl 0905.65063)]. The symmetric sequence spaces \(c_0\), \(\ell_1\), and \(\ell_2\) have a unique (up to equivalence) unconditional basis, consequently they also have a unique greedy basis. The authors present the first known cases of non-trivial Banach spaces (i.e., different from \(c_0\), \(\ell_1\), and \(\ell_2\)) with a unique greedy basis. As they say in the abstract of the paper, ``The variety and nature of those examples evince that a complete classification of Banach spaces with a unique greedy basis cannot be expected.'' The paper consists of six sections: ``Introduction and background'', ``Preliminaries'' (with the necessary information about Musielak-Orlicz spaces), ``Existence of greedy bases in Nakano spaces'', ``Uniqueness of greedy bases in Orlicz sequence spaces'', ``A super-reflexive Banach space with a unique greedy basis'', and ``Uniqueness of greedy bases in Marcinkiewicz spaces''.
