Following \textit{N. Andruskiewitsch} [Can. J. Math. 48, No. 1, 3--42 (1996; Zbl 0857.16033)], the Hopf center \(HZ(A)\) of a Hopf algebra \(A\) is the largest Hopf subalgebra of \(A\) included in the center of the algebra \(A\); the Hopf cocenter \(HC(A)\) is the Hopf algebra quotient of \(A\) which is universal among cocentral quotients of \(A\). It is proved in this paper that there exists two exact sequences of Hopf algebras \[ k\longrightarrow HZ(A)\longrightarrow A\longrightarrow B\longrightarrow k \] and \[ k\longrightarrow C\longrightarrow A\longrightarrow HC(A)\longrightarrow k, \] generalizing the exact sequence of groups \[ 0\longrightarrow Z(G)\longrightarrow G\longrightarrow G/Z(G)\longrightarrow 0. \] Moreover, it is proved that \(A\) is always faithfully flat over \(HZ(A)\longrightarrow A\) and faithfully coflat over \(A\longrightarrow HC(A)\). As examples, Hopf (co)centers are described for the quantized enveloping algebra of a connected simple complex Lie algebra, and for the Drinfeld-Jimbo quantization of a complex semisimple simply connected Lie group.
