The topic of this paper is higher index theory relative to a \(*\)-homomorphism of \(C^*\)-algebras \(\phi:B_1\to B_2\). The main results of the paper are concerned with a relative geometric model \(K_*^{\text{geo}}(X;\phi)\) for the group \(KK_{*-1}(C(X),C_\phi)\), where \(C_\phi\) denotes the mapping cone of \(\phi\) and \(X\) is a finite CW-complex. The relevance of the group \(KK_{*-1}(C(X),C_\phi)\) is to index theory relative to \(\phi\). The group \(K_*^{\text{geo}}(X;\phi)\) was previously developed by the author in [Münster J. Math. 7, No. 2, 697--729 (2014; Zbl 1332.46069)]. The author provides an abstract isomorphism \(K_*^{\text{geo}}(X;\phi)\cong KK_{*-1}(C(X),C_\phi)\). Using higher Atiyah-Patodi-Singer theory, the author also constructs a concrete isomorphism when \(X\) is a point and \(\phi\) induces an injection on \(K\)-theory. Since the publication of this paper, the author and the reviewer have generalised the construction involving higher Atiyah-Patodi-Singer theory to arbitrary \(\phi\). The applications of the results in the paper are to \(\mathbb {R}/\mathbb {Z}\)-index theory using the unital inclusion of \(\mathbb {C}\) into a \(II_1\)-factor and to Freed-Melrose's \(\mathbb {Z}/k\)-index theorem using the unital inclusion of \(\mathbb {C}\) into \(M_k(\mathbb {C})\).
