Any automorphism \(\phi\) of a group \(\Gamma\) induces an action of \(\Gamma\) on itself by \(g.x = gx \phi(g^{-1})\). One calls an orbit a \(\phi\)-conjugacy class. The group \(\Gamma\) is said to have the \(R_{\infty}\)-property if there are infinitely many \(\phi\)-conjugacy classes for each automorphism \(\phi\) of \(G\). This is the same as saying that automorphisms of such a group cannot have finite Reidemeister numbers. In this paper, the authors establish that irreducible lattices in higher rank semisimple Lie groups with finite centers have the \(R_{\infty}\)-property. In an earlier paper, they had proved this property for a number of groups including principal congruence subgroups in \(\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{Z})\) and \(\mathrm{Sp}(n,\mathbb{Z})\). The above groups were somewhat easier to treat. In the theorem proved here, the authors need to use some deep results like Borel's density theorem, strong rigidity, Margulis's normal subgroup theorem.
