The following integral equation of the second kind is investigated \[ u(x)-\int\limits_{f(x)}^{g(x)}K(x,t)R(u(t))dt=F(x), \] where \(x\in[a,b]\), \(R:C[a,b]\to C[a,b]\) is the nonlinear operator, \(f,g,F\in C[a,b]\), \(K\in C([a,b]\times [a,b])\), \(a\leq f(x)\leq g(x)\leq b\). The paper presents an application of the homotopy analysis method for solving this equation in nonlinear and linear cases. In this method a series is created, the sum of which (if the series is convergent) gives the solution of the equation. Conditions ensuring convergence of this series are presented. The error of the approximate solution, obtained by considering only a partial sum of series, is also estimated. The paper includes also examples illustrating the usage of the investigated method, including an example having practical application for calculating the charge in supply circuit of flash lamps used in cameras.
