The authors study \(C_0\)-semigroups on Hardy and Dirichlet spaces. The main results of the paper are complete characterisations of quasicontractive \(C_0\)-semigroups on such spaces with generators of the prescribed form \(Af=Gf'\). Here, a \(C_0\)-semigroup \((T(t))_{t\geq0}\) is said to be quasicontractive if there exists \(\omega\in \mathbb{R}\) such that \(\|T(t)\|\leq e^{\omega t}\) for all \(t\geq0\). Using techniques based on ideas from classical semigroup theory, the authors show that such operators \(A\) generate \(C_0\)-semigroups of composition operators under a simple sufficient and necessary condition on the function \(G\). Indeed, Theorem~3.1 shows that, given a function \(G\) in the Hardy space \(X=H^2(\mathbb{D})\), the operator \(A\) defined as above on the domain \(D(A)=\{f\in X:Gf'\in X\}\) generates a \(C_0\)-semigroup of composition operators on \(X\) if and only if \[ 2\,\mathrm{Re}(\overline{z}\,G(z))+\big(1-|z|^2\big)\,\mathrm{Re}(G'(z))\leq0 \] for all \(z\in\mathbb{D}\). In Theorem 4.3, the authors show that, if \(X\) is instead taken to be the Dirichlet space, then the same condition is again necessary and sufficient for \(A\) to generate a quasianalytic \(C_0\)-semigroup (necessarily of composition operators), and other equivalent statements are presented, too. The paper is very clearly written and makes a nice contribution to the theory of \(C_0\)-semigroups on spaces of analytic functions.
