Let \(k\) be a ring, \(X\) a \(k\)-scheme and \(R\) a \(k\)-algebra, which is endowed with an arbitrary topology (which need not be compatible with the ring operations). Grothendieck constructed a topology on \(X(R)\) for the case that \(X = \text{Spec}\,A\) is an affine scheme over \(k\), by taking the coarsest topology for which all evaluation maps from \(\text{Hom}_k\, (A,R)\) to \(R\) are continuous. The authors generalize this construction to arbitrary \(k\)-schemes \(X\) and call this \textit{the fine topology on} \(X(R)\). It is proved that under appropriate specializations this topology coincides with the strong topology (if \(R=k\) is a local topological Hausdorff ring with open unit group and \(X\) is of finite type) and with the adelic topology (if \(R\) is the adéle ring of a global field \(k\) and \(X\) is of finite type).
