The classical Hahn-Mazurkiewicz theorem says that a continuum \((=connected\) compact metrizable space) X is the continuous image of the closed unit interval I if and only if X is locally connected. In shape theory, one would like to replace I by any continuum of the same shape, i.e. by any CE \((=cell\)-like) continuum. In this paper the following is proved. For a continuum X, the fundamental pro-group \(pro\)-\(\pi\) \({}_ 1(X)\) is pro-finite if and only if every continuum \(X'\) shape equivalent to X is the continuous image of a CE continuum. This should be compared with the theorem below which follows from results due to \textit{J. Krasinkiewicz} [Bull. Acad. Pol. Sci., Sér. Sci. Math. Astron. Phys. 25, 1265-1269 (1977; Zbl 0367.54014)], \textit{D. R. McMillan jun.} [Proc. Conf. Charlotte 1974, 367-381 (1975; Zbl 0309.55012)] and the author [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 261, 369-386 (1980; Zbl 0452.57002)]. For a continuum X, \(pro\)-\(\pi\) \({}_ 1(X)\) is Mittag-Leffler (equivalently, X is pointed 1-movable) if and only if there exists a continuum \(X'\) shape equivalent to X which is the continuous image of a CE continuum.
