A smooth function from a d-dimensional manifold M to the space of complex \(n\times n\)-matrices partitions M into two sets: the stability region consisting of all points of M whose corresponding matrix has all eigenvalues in the open left half plane and the complement of the stability region. A result of \textit{L. V. Levantovskij} [Funct. Anal. Appl. 16, 34-37 (1982); translation from Funkts. Anal. Prilozh. 16, No.1, 44-48 (1982; Zbl 0508.58026)] shows that, up to a local diffeomorphism of M, the generic matrix function is equivalent to one of a finite set of local normal forms. A theorem is announced in the paper under review that generalizes this result to the case where the \(n\times n\)-matrices are replaced by the operators with discrete spectrum on an infinite dimensional space.
