The authors generalize the coupled integral equation approach [e.g.: the last two authors, Int. J. Heat Mass Transfer 28, 1481-1485 (1985; Zbl 0576.76103)] to develop simple, approximate analytic solutions for the location of moving interface for melting or solidification in a slab of finite thickness, when one surface is subjcted to a time-varying temperature and the other maintained at a constant temperature. The influence of physical parameters such as the Stefan number and the applied surface temperature on the interface position and boundary heat fluxes is examined.
