The authors study the boundary value problem \(x'''=f(t,x)\), \(x(0)=x(1)=x'(\eta)=0\) with \(0\leq \eta \leq 1\), concentrating on the most troublesome case \(\eta =1/2\) in which \(\lambda =0\) is an eigenvalue of the linear problem. They formulate the problem abstractly in \(L^ 2(0,1)\) and describe some approaches to its solution.
