Let \(f\) be a smooth map (not necessarily a diffeomorphism) of a smooth manifold and let \(\Lambda\) be a hyperbolic basic set of \(f\) (not necessarily expanding). The author shows that the Gibbs states of Hölder potentials on \(\Lambda\) are approximated by weighted sums of atomic measures on preimage sets. The main difficulty relies on the fact that the set of prehistories of a point may be uncountable and that local stable manifolds of different points may intersect.
