Consider an indefinite inner product \([x,y]=y^*Jx\), \(x,y\in{\mathbb C}^n\), where \(J\) is a complex diagonal involution matrix. A matrix \(A\in {\mathbb C}^{n\times n}\) is called \(J\)-normal if \(A^{\#}A=AA^{\#}\), where \(A^{\#}\) is the \(J\)-adjoint of \(A\) defined by \([Ax,y]=[x,A^{\#}y]\). The authors investigate the inverse eigenvalue problems for \(J\)-normal matrices and obtain some important results. More precisely, the manuscript contains the following: (1) Any matrix \(A\in {\mathbb C}^{n\times n}\) is \(J\)-unitarily similar to a ``quasi-traingular'' form. (2) A special quasi-Jacobi form can be derived for \(J\)-normal matrices which are \(J\)-unitarily diagonalizable. (3) Let \(A(1|1)\) be the principal submatrix of \(A\in {\mathbb C}^{n\times n}\) obtained by deleting the first row and column. For distinct complex numbers \(\alpha_1,\dots,\alpha_n, \mu_1,\dots\mu_{n-1}\), the sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of \(\sigma(A)=\{\alpha_1,\dots,\alpha_n\}\), \(\sigma(A(1|1))=\{\mu_1,\dots,\mu_{n-1}\}\), where \(A\) is \(J\)-normal and \(J\)-unitarily diagonalizable, or \(A\) is \(J\)-normal with \(A(1|1)\) being \(J(1|1)\)-unitarily diagonalizable, or \(A\) is a pseudo-Jacobi matrix, are described. There exists unicity in the case of pseudo-Jacobi matrices. These results and their corollaries extend several well-known theorems for normal and Hermitian matrices.
