Test configurations arise naturally in the study of stability of Kähler manifolds, for example, in the work of \textit{S. K. Donaldson} [J. Differ. Geom. 62, No. 2, 289--349 (2002; Zbl 1074.53059)]. For each test configuration of a line bundle \(L\) over Kähler manifold \((M, \omega)\) and a Hermitian metric on \(L\), \textit{D. H. Phong} and \textit{J. Sturm} [J. Symplectic Geom. 5, No. 2, 221--247 (2007; Zbl 1193.53104)] constructed an infinite geodesic ray in the infinite dimensional symmetric space of Hermitian metrics on \(L\). The purpose of this paper is to analyze the construction and the regularity property of such geodesic rays for toric varieties. Specifically, the authors show that the Bergman approximations used by Phong and Sturm converge in \(C^1\) to the geodesic ray, and the geodesic ray itself is \(C^{1,1}\) but no better. ``A novelty in the analysis is the connection between Bergmann metrics, Bergmann kernels and the theory of large deviations.''
