Let \(X\) be a compact Hausdorff space and \(p_i:X\to {\mathbb{R}}\), \(i=1,2,\dots,k\), given continuous functions. The main result of this note is a necessary condition for the representability of real-valued continuous functions on \(X\) by \(\Sigma_{i=1}^k g_i\circ p_i\) with continuous \(g_i\). This condition is formulated in terms of paths with respect to functions \(p_1,\dots,p_k\).
