Let \(G\) be a locally compact abelian group and let \(S\) be a measurable subsemigroup of \(G\) such that \(S-S =G\), with an order defined by \( s \geq t \) if and only if \(s- t \in S\). The limit over \(s\in S\) is defined by this order. Let \(T\) be a bounded representation of \(S\) on a Banach space \(X\) and \( f \in L_{1}(S)\); then \(\hat{f}(T)\,x =\int f(s)\,T(s)\, x\, ds\) \((x \in X)\). Let \(A_{T}\) (resp., \(W_{T}\)) denote the closure in the uniform (resp., weak) operator topology of the set \(\{\hat{f}(T): f \in L_{1}(S)\}\). Then \(A_{T}\) and \(W_{T}\) are commutative Banach algebras. In this paper, the author investigates the asymptotical behavior of the radicals of \(A_{T}\) and \(W_{T}\). This is essentially achieved by extending the results of \textit{G. Muraz} and \textit{Vũ Quôc Phóng} [J. Funct. Anal. 126, No. 1, 1--6 (1994; Zbl 0837.22002)] to \(A_{T}\) and \(W_{T}\). Similar problems are also considered for representations of \(S\) on a Hilbert space \(H\). As an application, the author presents some results concerning the structure of weakly compact homomorphisms of semigroup algebras. Specifically, he proves that every weakly compact homomorphism from \(L_{1}(S)\) into another Banach algebra is compact.
