    This paper concerns the asymptotic behavior of the one-dimensional wave equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions \[ \begin{cases} (t,x)=z_{xx}(t,x)-a(x)\sigma(z_t(t,x)), \quad (t,x)\in \mathbb{R}_+\times [0,1]\\ z(t, 0)=z(t, 1)=0,\quad t\in \mathbb{R}_+\\ z(0, x)=z_0(x), z_t(0, x)=z_1(x), \quad x\in [0,1], \end{cases} \] where \(a : [0,1] \to \mathbb{R}_+\) is continuous, non zero and bounded, and \(\sigma: \mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}\) is locally Lipschitz and odd; \(\sigma (s)s > 0\) for any \(s \in \mathbb{R} \setminus \{0\}\) and \(\sigma'(0) > 0\). The associated spaces are \(H_p(0,1)\) and \(D_p(0,1)\) with \(p\in [2, \ \infty]\). Results about well-posedness and exponential stability with decay rate estimates are presented.
