The mathematical model describing the hydrodynamics of ferrofluids is studied. The system governing the motion is a combination of the Navier-Stokes equation, the magnetization equation and the magnetostatic equation. The unknown velocity \(u(x_1,x_2,t)=(u_1,u_2)\), the pressure \(p(x_1,x_2,t)\), the local magnetic field \(M(x_1,x_2,t)=(M_1,M_2)\), the demagnetiziing field \(H(x_1,x_2,t)=(H_1,H_2)\) and the angular velocity \(\omega(x_1,x_2,t)\) satisfy to the equations in a half space \(\{x=(x_1,x_2)\in\mathbb{R}^2, t>0 \}\) \[ \begin{array}{l} \rho\left(\frac{\partial u}{\partial t}+u\cdot\nabla u \right)-(\eta+\zeta)\Delta u+\nabla p=\mu M\cdot\nabla H+2\zeta \left(\frac{\partial \omega}{\partial x_2},-\frac{\partial \omega}{\partial x_1}\right),\vphantom{\frac{I}{\frac{I}{\frac{I}{I}}}}\\ \rho k\left(\frac{\partial \omega}{\partial t}+u\cdot\nabla\omega\right)-\eta\prime\Delta\omega= \mu M\times H+2\zeta(\mbox{curl}\,u-2\omega),\vphantom{\frac{I}{\frac{I}{\frac{I}{I}}}}\\ \frac{\partial M}{\partial t}+u\cdot\nabla M-\sigma\Delta M=(M_2,-M_1)\omega- \frac{1}{\tau}(M-\chi H), \vphantom{\frac{I}{\frac{I}{\frac{I}{I}}}}\\ \mbox{div}\,(M+H)=F,\quad \mbox{div}\,u=\mbox{curl}\,H=0, \vphantom{\frac{I}{\frac{I}{\frac{I}{I}}}}\\ (u,\omega,M,H)\Big|_{t=0}=(u_0,\omega_0,M_0,H_0), \end{array} \] where \(F\) is the external magnetic field, \(\mu=\text{const}\) is the permeability of vacuum, \(k>0\) is the inertia, \(\tau>0\) is the entropic relaxation time, \[ \mbox{curl}\,u=\frac{\partial u_2}{\partial x_1}-\frac{\partial u_1}{\partial x_2}. \] The meaning of the coefficients \(\rho,\eta,\zeta,\eta\prime,\sigma,\chi\) can only be guessed, since the article, unfortunately, does not say anything about them. The authors prove that the problem has a unique global in time weak solution for any initial datum and any external force. The time decay rate for this solution is established too. The propagation of the initial smoothness is proved in the last part of the paper.
