The main result of the paper is the existence of homoclinic-type solutions of the second-order Hamiltonian system \[ \ddot{q}(t)+\nabla_qV(t,q(t))=f(t), t\in \mathbb R, \] with \(\lim_{t\to \pm \infty} q(t)= \lim_{t\to \pm \infty} \dot{q}(t)=0\). Here the \(C^1\)-smooth potential \(V:\mathbb R \times \mathbb R^n \to \mathbb R\) satisfies a relaxed superquadratic growth condition, its gradient is uniformly bounded in the time variable on every compact subset of \(\mathbb R^n\), and the norm of the forcing term \(f\) in the space of square integrable functions is sufficiently small. It generalizes the authors' earlier result [Differ. Integral Equ. 30, No. 3--4, 259--272 (2017; Zbl 1424.37036)]. The idea of the proof is to approximate the original system by time-periodic systems with periods tending to infinity. The mountain-pass argument is then used and the limit in the topology of almost uniform convergence concludes the proof. Several 1-dimensional examples are presented together with numerical solutions.
