A Lie semialgebra is a closed convex and additively stable subset of a finite dimensional real Lie algebra which is locally closed with respect to the Campbell-Hausdorff multiplication near 0. Lie semialgebras occur as the set of tangent vectors of (local) semigroups in Lie groups. The algebra sl(2,\({\mathbb{R}})\) contains many three dimensional Lie semialgebras, the algebra sl(2,\({\mathbb{C}})\) contains no proper six dimensional Lie semialgebra. The reason for this observation is clarified in this paper. The principal theorem is as follows: Theorem. Let L be a complex Lie algebra and W a Lie semialgebra in L with \(L=W-W\). Then the commutator algebra [L,L] is contained in W. - Lie semialgebras W which contain [L,L] are trivial in the sense that they simply amount to a closed wedge W/[L,L] in the abelian Lie algebra L/[L,L]. In order to observe Lie semialgebras which are not trivial in this sense one must concentrate on real Lie algebras which do not allow the structure of a complex Lie algebra; in this regard, they are real phenomena.
