A strongly decomposable operator [\textit{C. Apostol}, Rev. Roum. Math. Pur. Appl. 13, 147-150 (1968; Zbl 0155.462)] is a bounded linear operator T acting on a complex Banach space X which, for every spectral maximal space [\textit{C. Foiaş}, Arch. Math. 14, 341-349 (1963; Zbl 0176.438)] Y, induces two decomposable operators [ibid.]: the restriction \(T| Y\) and the coinduced \(X| Y\) on the quotient space X/Y. This paper studies the properties of strongly decomposable operators and gives some necessary and sufficient properties for an operator T to be strongly decomposable. Also, a duality theorem is given specifying the conditions under which strong decomposability is transmitted by T to the conjugate operator \(T^*\) and viceversa.
