Schauder's theorem says that the dual of a compact operator is compact, and a theorem of \textit{K. Vala} [Ann. Acad. Sci. Fenn. Ser. A I 351, 1--9 (1964; Zbl 0132.09801)] says that certain products of left and right multiplications by compact operators are compact. \textit{F. F. Bonsall} [``Compact linear operators'', Yale University (1967)] gives (Theorem 17.1) a result which includes both Schauder's theorem and Vala's theorem. In this paper we offer a quantitative version of Bonsall's theorem, showing that a certain ``measure of non-compactness'' of Bonsall's operator is dominated by the measure of non-compactness of its constituents. A rather more precise version, using a slightly different measure of non- compactness, could be extracted from the thesis of \textit{K. Astala} [Ann. Acad. Sci. Fenn. Ser. A I 29, 1--42 (1980; Zbl 0426.47001)].
