The following theorems are proved: (1) Let X be a Banach space, Y an infinite-dimensional manifold in X and \(\tau\) a separable locally convex topology weaker than the norm topology. Let \(V_ n\) be a sequence of convex, bounded, \(\tau\)-closed subsets such that \(V_ n\cap Y=\emptyset\) for each n. Then Y contains an infinite- dimensional subspace whose \(\tau\)-closure does not intersect \(V_ n\) for any n. (2) Let X and Y are quasi-complementary (i.e., \(X\cap Y=0\) and \([X+Y]=E)\), but not complementary subspaces of a Banach space E. Then there exists a closed subspace \(Y_ 1\supset Y\), \(\dim Y_ 1/Y=\infty\) and \(Y_ 1\cap X=0.\) Some known results follow from these theorems as corollaries. For example, theorem (1) can be used to show that if \(X^{**}\) is separable, then X and \(X^*\) contain infinite-dimensional reflexive subspaces.
