In a series of papers the author and Gooden [the author, Int. J. Multiphase Flow 5, 169-183 (1979; Zbl 0434.76085); the author and \textit{P. K. Gooden}, ibid. 7, 245-260 (1981; Zbl 0477.76087); ibid. 8, 627-639 (1982; Zbl 0496.76003) and ibid. 9, 227-250 (1983; Zbl 0515.76111)] have examined various aspects of the fluid motion generated in a semi-infinite fluid by a submerged moving solid when the fluid surface is contaminated with a surfactant film. The aim of this paper is to extend the analysis to problems of a non-axially symmetric nature. Various linearised models governing the variation of the film concentration have been discussed. These have been used to solve the non- axially symmetric problem of Stokeslet placed in a bulk fluid with its axis parallel to the surface. A similar analysis for the case of rotelet whose axis is parallel to the surface has also been presented. Readers may look forward to more papers in this area of research, outline of which has been given in the concluding section.
