A band B equipped with a unary operation * which satisfies the identities \((x^*)^*=x\), \((xy)^*=y^*x^*\) and \(xx^*x=x\) is said to be a *- band. The author constructs the free *-band \(F_ n\) on an n-element set and obtains a formula for the cardinality of \(F_ n\).
