The limit as \(\epsilon \downarrow 0\) of the solution u(x) to a first order scalar ordinary differential equation \(\epsilon u'(x)=f(u(x)), 0<x<1\), with given mass \(\int u(x)dx=m\), is thoroughly discussed. f(u) is assumed to be smooth, vanishing at least at one point, on the real line. The results differ considerably depending on the location of m and the behavior of f.
