The self-dual Yang-Mills equations admit the approach based on the inverse scattering method. The inverse scattering approach enables one to apply the solution of the initial value problem due to Takasaki. Using this solution the unique canonical initial condition (in the sense of Takasaki) is related to each gauge equivalence class of both local and global framed (in the sense of Donaldson) self-dual solutions with the gauge group U(r). Since the initial value problem has a unique solution, the gauge freedom is eliminated in this way. In the twistor framework, a geometric construction relating the canonical initial condition to a distinguished canonical transition function is given and consequently the complete transcription of the ADHM construction into the inverse scattering formalism is derived.
