Evaluating additive functions over ordered sets in general is a difficult problem. For ordered sets satisfying some deviation property, the author shows how to express the values of the additive function as the minimum value of several functions that are relatively easy to compute. Furthermore the relation between supermodularity and concavity and this kind of representation are discussed. Also the use of additive functions in encoding vague information by interpreting them as evidence or belief functions is stressed.
