A study of the accuracy of the Bessel-Sturm expansion method for calculating elastic scattering S-matrix elements is carried out. The diagonal as well as the coupling potentials used in the Schrödinger equation are of Gaussian form with magnitudes of the type encountered in nuclear physics applications. It is found that the error decreases exponentially with the number of basis functions included in the calculation, but the accuracy does not increase beyond a certain value as a result of the cutoff of the potential at the matching radius \({\mathcal R}\).
