The authors consider the Cauchy problem for the isentropic Euler equations with degenerate linear damping. For constant positive damping coefficient \(\alpha\) and compact initial location of the gas, absence of global existence of regular solutions is proved. For \(\alpha(t)\rightarrow 0\) as \(t\rightarrow\infty\) (degenerate damping) a few cases are considered. The main result is that for fast convergence there is a global regular solution, while for slow convergence there is none.
