The first named author develops a bivariant \(K\)-theory \(kk^{\text{alg}}\) on the category of all locally convex algebras [\textit{J. Cuntz}, ``\(K\)-theory and \(C^*\)-algebras'', in: Algebraic \(K\)-theory, number theory, geometry and analysis, Proc. int. Conf., Bielefeld/Ger. 1982, Lect. Notes Math. 1046, 55--79 (1984; Zbl 0548.46056)]. Hence the \(kk^{\text{alg}}\)-invariants can be computed for many interesting examples of locally convex algebras as modules over the graded coefficient ring \(R_*=kk^{\text{alg}}_*(\mathbb{C,C})\), however, the determination of \(R_*\) and more generally, a \(K\)-theoretic description of \(kk^{\text{alg}}_0(\mathbb{C},A)\) remained open. The aim of the present paper is to show that the problem of determination of \(R_*\) can be overcome simply by stabilizing by the Schatten ideal \({\mathcal{L}}_p\) rather than by \(K\). In fact, for the \({\mathcal L}_p\)-stabilized theory \(kk^{{\mathcal L}_p}\) it is proved that \(kk_0^{{\mathcal L}_p}(\mathbb{C},A)=K_0(A\widehat{\otimes}{\mathcal L}_p)\) for \(p>1\) and thus, in particular, that \(kk^{{\mathcal L}_p}_*(\mathbb{C,C})=\mathbb{Z}[u,u^{-1}]\), with a generator \(u\) in degree 2. Similar results hold for stabilization with more general symmetrically normed multiplicative Banach ideals including the dual \({\mathcal L}_{1+}\) of the Macaev ideal. The key in this paper's result is a locally convex version of an Higson's homotopy invariance theorem [\textit{N. Higson}, ``Algebraic \(K\)-theory of stable \(C^*\)-algebras'', Adv. Math. 67, No. 1 (1988; Zbl 0635.46061)]. Technically, the smooth homotopy-invariance of \(M_2\)-stable and split-exact functors is proved; in particular of negative algebraic \(K\)-theory, for ``weakly \({\mathcal J}\)-stable'' locally convex algebras, \({\mathcal J}\) being a harmonic Banach ideal.
