The question when the Green function of a perturbed operator is comparable with the Green function of the unperturbed one is treated within a more general framework. If \((E,{\mathcal E})\) is a measurable space and \(G: E\times E\to [0,\infty]\) an \({\mathcal E}\)-measurable function with the triangle property, i.e. there exists a real constant \(C> 0\) such that for all \(x,y,z\in E\) \[ \min(G(x, z), G(z,y))\leq CG(x, y), \] \(G_1\) and \(G_2\) are comparable if there exists a real constant \(c> 0\) such that \[ G_1\leq cG_2\quad\text{and}\quad G_2\leq cG_1. \] Let \(\mu\) be a signed measure such that \((G +^* G)^{\mu^{\pm}}\) are bounded, all functions \(G(\cdot, y)\) and 1 are \(G^{\mu^+}\)-dominated and all \(G(y,\cdot)\) and 1 are \(^*G^{\mu^+}\) dominated; here \(^*G(x, y)= G(y, x)\) and \(G^\nu f= \int G(\cdot, z)f(z)\nu(dz)\). It is shown that there exists an \({\mathcal E}\times{\mathcal E}\)-measurable function \(\widetilde G\) comparable with \(G\) and satisfying \[ \widetilde G(\cdot, y)+ G^{\mu^+}(\cdot, y)= G(\cdot, y)+ G^{\mu^-}\widetilde G(\cdot, y) \] if and only if the spectral radii of the operators \((I+ G^{\mu^+})^{-1} G^{\mu^-}\) and \((I+^* G^{\mu^+})^{-1*} G^{\mu^-}\) on the Banach space of bounded \({\mathcal E}\)-measurable functions on \(E\) equipped with the supremum norm are strictly less than 1. Note that \(\widetilde G\) is the Green function of \(\Delta-\mu\) if \(G\) is the classical Green function on a region \(E\) in \(\mathbb{R}^d\). It is also shown that the assumption that \(G\) has the triangle property can be relaxed with the aid of weight functions.
