The book is the second of two volumes on principles of engineering mechanics. Volume 1: ``Kinematics -- The geometry of motion'' includes Chapters 1 through 4 [for a review see (1986; Zbl 0697.70001)]. Volume 2 includes Chapters 5 through 11: 5. The foundation principles of classical mechanics. 6. Dynamics of a particle. 7. Momentum, work, and energy. 8. Dynamics of a system of particles. 9. The moment of inertia tensor. 10. Dynamics of a rigid body. 11. Introduction to advanced dynamics. In Volume 2, the foundation principles of classical mechanics are dicussed in detail, and numerous applications are presented. The book can serve as a basis for a course and a self-study for advanced undergraduate or first-year graduate students, specializing in mechanics, engineering science, engineering physics, applied mathematics, material science, mechanical, aerospace and civil engineering. Numerous assignment problems, ranging from easy to more difficult problems, are provided at the end of each chapter. The book is intended for readers who have mastered the prerequiusite mathematics, and thus some essential mathematical tools are reinforced directly within the text and indirectly in the illustrations, exercises and problems selected for the study. For instance, elements of the theory of linear differential equations of second order are presented, hyperbolic and elliptic functions are introduced, and the analytic geometry of conic sections is reviewed. Interesting historical remarks are scattered throughout the text, and extensive lists of references with short annotations follow each chapter.
