The authors classify non-elementary hyperbolic groups of Fibonacci type, with a few exceptions and they show that the Tits alternative holds for these groups. The paper completes work done by several authors, including work done in 1998 [\textit{H. Helling} et al., J. Lie Theory 8, No. 1, 1--23 (1998; Zbl 0896.20026); \textit{C. P. Chalk}, Commun. Algebra 26, No. 5, 1511--1546 (1998; Zbl 0902.20012)].
